Softball coaches
teach their catchers fielding bunts on the right side of the infield
to face first base and keep the ball on the throwing side of the
body (tips in the brochure). The throw gets off sooner because the
catcher is already in a throwing position.
The catcher's
shoulders are already facing the target and, do to the body
position, the catcher can easily stride directly to first base for
an accurate throw.

"THROWING
RUNNERS OUT
THROWING THE BALL
Arms - Glove hand to the right shoulder with the throwing
arm extended past the ear. As the throw is made, keep the glove arm
parallel to the ground... Shoulders - the left
shoulder armed at the target... Wrist - snap the wrist as
the ball is thrown. Feet - Depending upon the catcher's
arm the footwork may vary.
Strong arms. Right Foot - plants perpendicular
to the target... Body - rock back on the right foot while the
arm prepare to throw the ball... Throwing Arm - throws the
ball.
Average arms. Right Foot - steps forward 6
inches, foot plants perpendicular to the target... Hips -
turn... Throwing Arm - pulls back... Left Foot -
strides to the target... Movement - throws the ball. In
general, the catcher pivots on the right foot, keep the shoulders
closed, hips in line with the target, then takes a stride with the
left foot to throw the ball..."
